It looks like Tuesday’s aren’t just for Speedmasters anymore as Omega announced this morning the release of their newest limited edition. Given, we have all been expecting some sort of James Bond limited edition to come out sooner or later with the upcoming film to be released next year, but I think this one definitely took many of us for surprise as it’s not related to the upcoming film. Instead, Omega has introduced a new Diver 300m in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Yes, another 50th anniversary limited edition…so let’s dive right on into it with our first impressions as we have not seen it in person just yet.
The watch itself has many subtle hints to the film and the franchise which die hard James Bond fans are sure to appreciate. The most obvious being the gun barrel design on the dial which is synonymous with James Bond as it’s featured in the opening credits of many James Bond films. Some of the less obvious features include a hidden message in the 10:00 lume plot that says “50” (obviously referring to the anniversary of the film). You’ll notice that the 7 on the date wheel is also done in the same font as the infamous 007 logo that also appears on the side of the case when labeling it’s limited edition number. One of the more unique features that true fans will pick up on is the 12:00 marker which is representative of the Bond family coat of arms.

Our First Thoughts
This is most definitely not the James Bond limited edition that we were expecting with the new film debuting next year, but we are sure that Omega will have another watch or few to throw out between then and now. While this new limited edition is very aesthetically pleasing, it is a bit unoriginal and falls a bit flat. Omega has basically taken different features from previous James Bond limited editions and put them on a new watch. The family crest can be found all over the Aqua Terra released a few years ago and we have seen this gun barrel dial several times in the past. We would have loved to have seen more originality come out of the watch.
Regardless, it is still a handsome piece. If you have seen the new 300m divers in person, then you’ll know that the applied markers are just absolutely stunning and sit up incredibly high on the dial. The fact that these are gold will only accentuate that detail. The use of side plaques by Omega is a unique way to display the limited edition number that we have only seen used once before by Omega on the SeaMaster 300m Diver Tantalum released last year (see it here). And of course there is the box. As much as we all like to give Omega grief, we can also agree that no ones does limited edition watch packaging quite like they do.
At 7,007 pieces, and not tied to the new film, it’s hard to imagine these selling out quickly. They do have quite a unique appeal to James Bond fans and Omega works hard to capitalize on that. The price point is much lower than many James Bond limited edition pieces of the past which is a relief. Only time will tell…one thing’s for sure, we definitely wouldn’t mind seeing one in person to get a better idea of it.
